Information for Primary Care

Genomic medicine is transforming the healthcare of your patients

Whether it’s providing a diagnosis to patients with rare disease, identifying and managing individuals who have raised genetic risk of cancer, optimising treatments through pharmacogenomics, or empowering families to explore reproductive options, Genomic Medicine is already benefiting huge numbers of patients.

The Primary Care workforce will play a central role in harnessing the potential of Genomic Medicine, increasing the provision of genomic testing within NHS routine clinical care. There is a need for all Primary Care professionals to be equipped with the knowledge and skills required to identify individuals who could benefit from genomic testing and discuss the opportunities available with these families.

Here are a few examples of why genomics is important to primary care.
