1,000th woman recruited to the Generation Study at St Thomas’ Hospital

This month we have celebrated a major milestone.

1,000 expectant parents have now signed up to be part of the world leading Generation Study at St Thomas’ Hospital with more hospitals in the South East also soon to offer the chance for people to take part.

The research study aims to sequence the whole genome of 100,000 newborn babies across England. Every baby will be screened for over 220 rare genetic conditions which if detected early, can be treated.

Emilie Coates, who had her baby very recently said,
“I was really pleased to join the Generation study to contribute to research and so that my son could be screened for many genetic conditions. The DNA will be stored long-term, which means that we will hopefully help many valuable studies in the future”.

St Thomas’ Hospital will soon be joined in the South East by St. George’s Hospital, Medway Maritime Hospital and University Hospitals Sussex NHS Trust which includes Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton, Worthing Hospital and the Princess Royal Hospital in Haywards Heath.

More details on that very soon, but in the meantime find out more here.
