Study Day for Nursing & Midwifery Educators

October 6 2023 @ 9:30 AM - 3:30 PM

Preparing students & health professionals for genomics.

Every health professional will be using genomics as part of their everyday work.

We can help you to empower your students with genomic knowledge and enable them to meet the NMC Standards of Proficiency.

Join us on October 6th in London for our Study Day to find out how.

Cavendish Conference Centre, London 9:30am – 3:30pm

This is a free event, and all Nursing & Midwifery University Lecturers and Practice Educators from across London and the South East are very welcome.

Be first to hear about the new Genomic Medicine Nursing & Midwifery Core Principles for pre-registration genomic education programmes which will support you to deliver nursing & midwifery education about genomics

Please register your place so that we can guarantee we have enough lunch!

Places are allocated on a first come, first served basis.

Topics will include:

  • The importance of genomics for midwives & nurses
  • How the new Genomics Core Principles will support you to deliver nursing & midwifery education about genomics alongside the National Genomics Education Nurse Educator’s toolkit
  • Genomics Core Principles: how to make it a reality
  • Teaching resources
  • Consent & ethical issues
  • Student placements
  • What support is available

Genomic Medicine is now included in the Nursing Midwifery Council Standards of Proficiency so it is essential that educators are able to provide the right learning framework to enable trainees to meet their standards.

We will be launching the brand new Genomic Medicine Nursing & Midwifery Core Principles for pre-registration genomic education programmes which will support you to do just that.

This event is brought to you by a collaboration between the South East Genomic Medicine Service, the North Thames Genomic Medicine Service Alliance and the Pan-London HEI Working Group

If you have any questions, you can reach us at gst-tr.southeastgmsa@nhs.net

With any Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS) test ordered, a Record of Discussion (RoD) form will also need to be submitted. This document is to record the patient’s consent for genomic testing and their choice on taking part in research. Guidance on the patient choice conversation can be found here

This RoD form will be available for clinicians to download from this webpage. Once completed with the patient, it can be send to the lab with the corresponding test order form and sample.
Tests available to order will be listed in the National Genomic Test Directory. A test order form will soon be made available for clinicians on this webpage to download and complete. This form will include the address of the laboratory that the appropriate sample and completed form needs to be sent to.

Until the new Genomic Laboratory Service goes live, please continue to follow existing test order processes.

Later this year, the online test ordering tool for Whole Genome Sequencing will be integrated into the National Genomics Informatics System (NGIS) and clinicians will be able to search or filter to find a clinical indication, confirm eligibility criteria and start the test request process for their patient.
