Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS)
Which type of Whole Genome Sequencing test are you interested in?
Which type of WGS test do you need?
The processes for ordering a WGS test vary depending on the reasons the patient is having the test.
Some patients have WGS testing to look for germline genomic variants that could increase their chances of developing symptoms of Rare Diseases, including inherited cancer predisposition syndromes. If a genomic variant is found, they may receive a diagnosis of a genetic condition.
Some people have WGS testing because they have cancer and their medical team wants to identify somatic genomic variants present in the cancer cells. The result may help to inform the patient’s treatment and prognosis.
How can Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS) help patient?
Many genomic tests available through the NHS use Whole Genome Sequencing (WGS) technology. The Genomics Education Programme has produced a video in which clinicians explain how they have used Whole Genome Sequencing to help their patients.
